Let's Power Up Your Storytelling!

What is Head-Hopping, and how can you fix it in your story?

(Originally published May 9, 2022)

Hey, storyteller!

Have you ever read a scene in which it felt like the author was making you play Musical Chairs with the characters’ perspectives? You start out connecting with one character, living the scene through her eyes, then you jump into the thoughts of someone else. While you’re still reeling from that switch, you’re shoved into the emotions of the first character or yet another person entirely.

That’s what we call head-hopping. It’s jarring, often creates confusion, and sabotages a reader’s close connection with a particular character.

In this week’s writer coaching session, you’ll not only learn why head-hoping is bad for your story and how to fix it, but we’ll also go into workshop mode & revise part of a scene from a real story.

Watch the video to discover:

  • What head-hopping is NOT
  • The definition of head-hopping and what it does to your readers and your story
  • Techniques you can use in order to eliminate head-hopping
  • An example of head-hopping, a sample revision of that scene, and why the revised version is more powerful
