Filter Words: How...and Why...to Cut Them from Your Story

Hey, storyteller!
Our goal as authors is to immerse readers in the story, so they live the adventure with the character—so they become that character for a while. The last thing we want is to create a barrier between the reader and viewpoint character. However, certain words, called Filter Words, will often sneak in and create distance between the reader and the experiences of your characters.
But what are filter words, how do we spot them, and—most importantly—how do we eliminate them from our stories?
